General Questions about eBooks
What is an eBook?
What do I need to view the eBook?
What if I have a Mac?
What do I do?
Does the eBook install?
Can't .exe files carry viruses?
Will the eBook connect to the Internet?
What is an eBook?
The word "eBook" is an abbreviation of "electronic book" - a 'book' delivered in electronic format, opened and read on your computer.
An 'eBook' of the type I am using is essentially a self-contained little website.
The file opens into it's own browser window and displays pages, text etc. and uses web features such as links.
You can move around, print parts and so on.
Future eBooks might contain sound and video clips.
Since February 2007, these ebooks will also be available in pdf format.
What do I need to view the eBook?
You need Windows 95,98, NT4 and 2000 and, for your browser, IE4, 5 or later.
This particular eBook format only works with these programmes.
For PDF versions you will need Adobe Reader.
If you don't have Acrobat Reader® 4.0+ installed already, you can get the most recent version from Adobe for nothing here:
What if I have a Mac?
Since February 2007, these ebooks will also be available in pdf format.
What do I do?
Click on the download link.
You will be asked whether to open or download the eBook file.
Choose to download and save the file to your hard drive (desktop for example).
That's it!
Double click on the file name or icon and it will simply open for you.
Does the eBook install?
Although what you download is an .exe file - a little programme - it is completely self contained.
It does not 'install' or alter your computer in any way, and you can simply delete the file if you don't want it any more.
Can't these .exe files carry viruses?
This is true. However: I always check everything carefully with the most up-to-date anti virus software, and the eBook is completely safe and virus free.
Will the eBook connect to the Internet?
Slipstones Woodcarving Manuals will not try to connect to the Internet on opening, contain no 'pop-ups' and will not automatically attempt to link online.
There are, however, 'ordinary' websites links, which you can choose to click on if you want to. These link to other pages within the ebook and external, named, websites.
