Butternut. 2005 Maximum Width: 8 ft.

The design of this piece fits in the gable of a custom log home in the mountains of Vermont: a rustic home, the owner of which has a love of wildlife.

I wanted a big and bold design that would be in keeping with the large logs framing the carving; the work also had to read well from a distance.
The piece mounts up high so I chose native species one would find high in the trees.

The leaves roughly mimic those of the Butternut tree from which the work was carved.

I used air-dried Butternut: air-dried because it tends to carve better than kiln dried stock, and Butternut for its rich color and ease of carving:
 
Here the design is laid out and some band-sawing which was done before stock was glued is apparent:
