Author's Notes about the Carving.

I first found Chris Pye's website by running an internet search for references to the folklore of the Greenman. I was so impressed with Chris' carvings that I was inspired to try my hand at carving my own effigy of the Green Trickster.
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that it is carved entirely using an electric die grinder with carbide bits. I have yet to make the leap to mallet and chisel, but I've found carving to be such an addictive avocation that my Greenman now has the company of nearly 20 more ornamental masks and 2 large sculptures in the round.

I call this one Green Pa because it ended up looking quite a bit like my late father, Jerry (John), without any particular intent on my part.
My dad was an infamous trickster himself, and I like to imagine that he and the Greenman conspired to guide my hands from their hiding place in the spirit world.

The wood is from a wild cherry tree that had the misfortune of growing too close to my workshop. Being unseasoned wood, it cracked as I carved it, which I think adds some character.

The mixture of sap-wood and heart-wood made the center of the carving much darker than the outside. I really didn't like that, so I spray painted the carving with a base of dark green highlighted with bright yellow and metallic gold.

About the Carver.

I am a robotics programmer and electrical technician by trade. I'm presently living and working in Ionia, Michigan USA at an automotive manufacturing plant.

When I grow up I want to be an artist.
