Chris Pye: Woodcarving

Green Man MK II
Terry Moss
Brown Oak, 2003
Height 10in. Width 14in.

Author's Notes about the Carving.

This was the second one in the series carved in an ellipse (see Green Man MK.I).

In this design I wanted to hark back to the medieval carvers and get the foliage emerging from the mouth as many of the old carvings did.
I carved it with traditional tools, except for the ever useful bandsaw to cut the ellipse. The shakes in the wood were deliberately left in to give it an aged effect to the final carving.
Both this and Green Man Mk.I were first produced as maquettes and then scaled up to suit the size of the wood available.

Would you like to contribute an interesting, contemporary, Green Man (gargoyles, grotesque etc) woodcarving?
Or have you a friend you could encourage to have their work shown?
Yes? Then I'd love to here from you!

Write to me, telling me a little about it first.
Thanks!
