Author's Notes about the Carving.

I usually carve masks in the round, but recently I have decided to learn how to carve relief. I thought that it would be easy but I found there is a hole new set of challages to deal with.

On researching relief carvings I found Chris Pye's site and thus the inspiration of what to carve. A Green Man seemed to me to be the perfect challenge for a maskmaker to try and my attempt was to contrast the symmetry of the positive relief with the irregularity of the negative framing.

As to whether I like it... Well, ask me in a year or two. I find that I should always wait before I can finally decide on my opinions on a piece. By then I should be able to tell what I learnt by doing it.

However, I can't wait to start another one.

Would you like to contribute an interesting, contemporary, Green Man (gargoyles, grotesque etc) woodcarving?
Or have you a friend you could encourage to have their work shown?
Yes? Then I'd love to here from you!

Write to me, telling me a little about it first.
Thanks!
