Chris Pye: Woodcarving

The Oaken King
by Ruth Webb
Sycamore. Spring 2001
Height: 131/2in. Width: 6in.

Author's Notes about the Carving.

I was influenced by the two heads from St Bertrand de Comminges dated 1535. (See the book: Green Man by William Anderson and Clive Hicks, figs. 113 & 114.)

Unfortunately I lack the skill to produce anything approaching the strength and character of that carving, and I have a strong aversion to copying another carver's work anyway, so I designed this to suit my capabilities and taste.

The choice of sycamore was simply down to what was available to me at the time.
The back of the carving was hollowed out to allow me to create the open spaces between the lower leaves.
The carving is finished with tung oil and a light waxing.

About the Carver.

I mainly carve versions of the green man, tree spirits and animals, and all my designs are original.

Would you like to contribute an interesting, contemporary, Green Man (gargoyles, grotesque etc) woodcarving?
Or have you a friend you could encourage to have their work shown?
Yes? Then I'd love to here from you!

Write to me, telling me a little about it first.
Thanks!
