Chris Pye: Woodcarving

Radiant Green Man
by Dave Mahoney
Basswood, October 2003
Diameter 15in. Thickness 2in.

Author's Notes about the Carving.

I consider the design a variation of Chris Pye's solar Greenman from his book Elements of Woodcarving.

It's a pretty simple design; I think the large number of repeating leaves gives it a lot of interest. I used one of my house plants as a model for the leaves. I thought about giving him cat pupils but I stayed with the mysterious plain look.
The surface is left from the chisel with a coat of varnish and wax.

About the Carver.

I've been carving for a little over 2 years now. I learned basically everything from Chris Pye's books, most importantly how to sharpen tools.
I like carving basswood mostly reliefs.

Would you like to contribute an interesting, contemporary, Green Man (gargoyles, grotesque etc) woodcarving?
Or have you a friend you could encourage to have their work shown?
Yes? Then I'd love to here from you!

Write to me, telling me a little about it first.
Thanks!
