Chris Pye: Woodcarving

White Pine, May 2000.

About the Carver.

The piece was carved for a local Boreal 2000 Wood Show in Thunder Bay, Canada, from indigenous pine.

Years ago, I carved a Green man, who was a very fierce looking fellow and have long had the idea of a beautiful Green Woman - even though they are rare.

Maple leaves make 'Aurora Borealis' Canadian. Her green eyes were coloured with analine dyes (German "Clou" stains) with beeswax and turpentine completed the finish.

It was fun - even with the use of a Ryobe reciprocal carver and a Dremmel tool, it still took just under 300 hours to carve.
I started carving in 1975 trying to replicate Norwegian carvings in a book. I took courses from Frank Potocnic, a local carver who was trained in Oberammergau, Germany, until the early 90s.
I also took courses from Norwegian, and Norwegian-trained, carvers, and knife makers, in Decorah, Iowa.

Would you like to contribute an interesting, contemporary, Green Man (gargoyles, grotesque etc) woodcarving?
Or have you a friend you could encourage to have their work shown?
Yes? Then I'd love to here from you!

Write to me, telling me a little about it first.
Thanks!
