This is one of the smaller of the pair of corbels, in oak, propped up on the workbench as it would be in situ. Note how the ends of the 'volutes', the scrolls, at each end come out from the main mass (true for all the corbels). Rather than carve the main mass back to leave the volutes, the best way is to add additional wood ('flats') at these places - worked out from full-sized, working drawings - and carve them to shape. | |
